Yes, I was listening to an old Brenda Russell CD today 'Paris Rain', having completely forgotten that vinnie played 3 songs on it. This is the only one of any note, drumwise. Lovely album, sheila E plays one song on it too.

Mr. Chameleon does it again . . .

I'm not disagreeing, Roy, just playing devil's advocate with the other side of the coin.

It's cool that all these session greats can play various styles. I'm sure most of us can play different styles too but all I ever wanted to play was music that I liked (rock, pop, fusion, metal, country, jazz . . .) not something a producer wanted to fob off on me.

Sessions aren't for everyone, just because you don't do them doesn't mean you can't play (and play well.) I'd rather play what I want my way. Is there anything wrong with that?

Mr. Chameleon is right Roy! Don't think I've heard Vinnie play such nice samba as this before - cheers for the mp3 Rudy!

Five Eight,

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">It can be a challenge to have all of these ideas and the producer asks you to conform. The producer knows what the track will sound like in the end so the musicians have to kind of get rid of their ego and do it the producers way. That is a very difficult thing to deal with if you have a certain personality type that can't function in that environment. The fact that Vinnie gets aways with some pretty sick playing even with those confines shows you how much fire power he really has. His psychology must be pretty informed to not crack in a lot of these situations.

Without the Tony Williams, Elvin, Gary Husbands, Keith Moons, Ginger Bakers, Jack Dejohnettes, Billy Cobhams, Mitch Mitchells, Han Benniks, Al Fosters, Paul Motians, John Bohnams- etc... however; the world could become a very cold place.

What you said, Blake, about the challenge to conform is exactly why I never wanted to be a sessionman. It's a well known fact that a lot of producers are money men who don't know jack about music. And there are artists like Ray Charles and Riki Lee Jones who are, ahem, difficult to work with.

Most of those drummers you listed are the ones who fueled the fires of my imagination as a drummer. Vinnie certainly does that too (like his work with Zappa) however Brazilian sessions and many others (the new Megadeth, for example) he plays functional music that fits but doesn't necessarily move me. Why listen to music that doesn't move you? That's what it's for, right?

I'm not afraid to admit that whereas I enjoyed listening to Vinnie in the Ivan Lins context I would never listen to it TWICE.

Same goes for Brenda Russell and some Italian opera sessions I've heard Vinnie on.

That's nice. Is Vinnie playing on all of the tracks?

This is the most Brazilian sounding I've heard Vinnie. He's checked out Partido Alto !

I have an Ivan Lins record called "Awa Yio" . Tony Levin is playing bass on that one. Very nice record as well, but not trying to be totally Brazilian. It's more contemporary pop from what I remember. Vinnie sounds killin as usual on this one!

I absolutely agree with Blake.
At the same token, i also 100% agree with 5...his choices & why he made them.
Both are completely valid per the individual.
I have played sessions but I've also played way more live gigs than sessions, so i can attest to both POVs.
Very valid POVs as to the pros & cons of each side of the coin.
I don't necessarily call myself a "session guy" [because I don't feel I've been able to do it enough], but it certainly doesn't hurt to be known as one [who can do it well]...unless it's to stereotype one as a "studio guy" vs a "touring guy"...I hope we start to get away from that mentality [unless it really applies, which it may well in certain situations], but as a rule, i think it's becoming a bit archaic & annoying to label guys...but I can also see how it can be annoying as a hired gun or sideman to have to constantly put your playing in check...but some guys are suited for this, & suited for it well, & don't have a prob with it at all. And I think that's a good thing...Other guys would rather play their own thing their own way in their "own time"...it's all good...

Vinnie does both.
I'm sure some of his sessions might be the "time-punch - look at clock/watch" type, but you know he gives it his best [as if he could do worse ]
But let's face it, it's really nice that we can get to hear VC do his thing on the stuff like Patitucci's, Chick's, Zappa's, Karizma's, & Holdsworth's [AWA his own solo disc - another one please, Vinnie!]; even Sting...

The guys here were just stating another reason why Vinnie is so highly esteemed & respected amongst his peers/fellow musicians [as if he needed another reason ...]
